Quoth the Isley: It's Your Thing

I recently told a friend: "You don't get where you want to go by following someone else."

I think this important to remember, especially on days like today. Across the country there will be lots of BBQ's, beer drinking and base debauchery.

Which is totally cool.

But, along with all this merrymaking generally comes the inescapable peer pressure of well-meaning, yet potentially diet sabotaging, friends and family.

"C'mon...that ain't no baby bottle ~ drink up!" "Have another!" "What do you mean you aren't going to have some of this pie?" "I made it especially because I know you like it." "Just one bite won't hurt." "Ohhhh, plenty of people live perfectly normal lives without all their fingers - suck it up!"

Well, apart from that last one, it can be pretty easy to cave in and indulge, leaving your best intentions drowning somewhere in the french onion dip.

Here's what I think (duh, that's why it's my blog): treat yourself. At least little. It's Independence Day for pete's sake, free yourself a smidge. But indulge in ways that you want. If you want a beer, a margarita, an extra helping of potato salad, a slice of pie, 10 functioning digits, then make it happen.

If you feel pressured to overindulge, try to remember that Aunt Sally or Cousin Bobby will not be the ones dealing with the guilt, regret, poundage, hangover or extensive reconstructive surgery, that may result from any reckless actions on your part. You will.

You can't get where YOU want to go by following someone else.

It's your sparkler, kids. Do what you want.

Gosh, I remember the pressure the first time on WW. I learned my lesson now though. I can't tell anyone, including my mom when I'm trying to eat healthier. I was constantly told I was obsessing over points, blah blah blah. And I might have been. I lost a lot of weight being a points nazi, but I don't want to do that this time around. I do indulge because it's so much easier to give in a little than to keep myself from having what I want and only come back with a big eating vengeance.

Anyway, on the fourth we had burgers and frito boats. Mmmm... so tasty!
