I recently followed a suggestive blog headline to a ‘health and wellness’ site, which in turn, led to a story about young people (18+) stripping (not pole dancing but some home video/bra & panties type thing) for charity. As I read the post, the writer (and subsequent posters) seemed to suffer no loss of words in their fervent ‘tsk-tsking’ about young people and their wild ways these days. One poster even suggested that it might just be a ruse for an orgy. (What the… ?!)
Truthfully, the details of the blog entry are pretty inconsequential here; as a matter of fact I don’t really have an opinion on the actual issue itself. I can’t even attest to the veracity of the story. (There was a link but it could have led to The Weekly World News or Babes For Burkas, for all I know.)
What struck me was the hypocrisy of the whole thing.
Using a ‘sex sells-type’ headline (You fell for it, didn’t you?) in order to attract readers to your blog is no different than the ‘perceived immorality’ of using suggestive photos to gather attention to a charity.
I walk a fine line here.
I realize this.
I really want to rail against these people. But wouldn’t that make me just as bad?
I want to say “Keep the weeds off your path and don’t worry about clearing anyone else’s.”
I want to say that diverting attention away from your own struggles doesn’t make them go away. It only puts them in the dark, and that’s where monsters grow.
So here’s the deal.
In order to maintain some amount of integrity (ha!), I need to practice what I preach and shut up the hell up about it. Otherwise, I risk the chance of stumbling into the very same viper pit of piety and possibly end up the subject of some other chubby chick’s blog.
